Victory in Europe Day celebrates the Allied powers' victory in Europe on May 8, 1945,

The surrender marked the official end of the conflict in the war's European theatre.

While Victory in Europe Day marked an end to the fighting in Europe, it did not signal the end of World War II.

The conflict with Japan in the Pacific theatre remained and was not settled until August of 1945.

(Ret.) Major General Michael Dunlavey served in Vietnam.

He's also a WWII Historian.

He describes V-E Day as "bittersweet", in light of all the destructiveness.
