The Jefferson DeFrees Family Center has officially purchased property in North Warren near the site of the former Warren Mall, marking a major step forward in its long-planned effort to bring a children’s museum to the area.

The project has been in development for several years. A feasibility study conducted by the Family Center, Warren County and neighboring communities showed broad support for such a facility, indicating that a children’s museum would be a welcome addition to the region.

After a lengthy property search, the organization finalized the land deal following approval from its board of directors. The site includes several acres and will be home to what the Center is calling a children’s museum and discovery center.

"This is very exciting that we can expand from this building into something else that we can offer local and visiting families," stated Melinda Johnson, Executive Director of the Jefferson Defrees Family Center

The museum is expected to feature interactive exhibits for all ages and will be fully ADA compliant. The Jefferson DeFrees Family Center has partnered with RWS Global, the same firm that helped design the National Comedy Center in Jamestown, New York.

“This museum will create opportunities for families, children, and educators—and it’s expected to bring jobs and new energy to the region,” said Jennifer Madigan, Childcare Director for Jefferson Defrees. "So many times we have heard from families and visitors that there is nothing to do here on a rainy day, but with this museum there will be."

The multimillion-dollar project is still in its fundraising phase, with the organization looking to community support and events such as the upcoming Warren Gives online donation day, on May 14th, to help advance development.

A construction timeline and opening date has not yet been announced.
