The Last Word: Getting Funky in Girard
I don't believe anyone has ever described me as funky. Is that a good thing or a bad thing? Funky could be something that smells bad. Funky could also be something or someone that is stylish and hip.
I've arrived at a place that might help me find my funk, whatever that might be. I'm at Funk N Junk Thrift Store in Girard. Gretchen Cash is the owner. She sells clothing that would make anyone look funky. She also sells items that many people may call junk. However, in her customers eyes, those items are definitely funky.
"Everything I buy for the store, I try to make sure it has some kind of character,” says Gretchen.
Gretchen does not accept boxes of donations from the public as would a Salvation Army store or a Goodwill Store. She purchases only the things she believes her customers would find fascinating.
"I like to think that a lot of the funk and junk in here is inspirational to most of my customers because it is to me,” she says.
I'm finding things that are very inspirational and fun. I’m looking at a singing fish that you can mount on a wall. There’s an old push button telephone. I’m holding old trading cards that feature rock stars, including a photo of a young Steve Miller. There is a record player in which you can play one of the albums that’s available for purchase. That album is called Funky Favorites.
Speaking of funky, Gretchen has dressed some manikins and placed them inside the store’s front windows. The manikins look funky. But, what about me? I’m wearing a light green shirt, some brown dress pants, and running shoes.
“This wouldn't be funky?” I ask Gretchen.
“No,” she answers. “But we can funk you up. Should we give it a go? Follow me,” she says.
Gretchen hands me a couple of colorful shirts to try on. I think they are paisley. I'm now trying on a soft furry coat. She puts up my collar. Could it be I'm on my way to being funky? "Oh my gosh,” says Gretchen. “You're already there."
Not quite. I finish my dress-up by trying on a stylish hat and a some sexy shades. Who would believe it? A funky John Last!!!
Funk N Junk is located at 65 Main Street in Girard. It's open Tuesday though Saturday. The shop is closed on Sundays and Mondays as Gretchen is out looking to buy more funky items for her customers.
