The Chautauqua County Office for Aging Services hosted its first-ever joint CHQ Aging Expo and Conference this week at SUNY Fredonia, drawing one of the largest crowds for any event organized by the county government.
More than 600 older adults, caregivers, and community members preregistered for the event, with additional attendees welcomed at the door. Nearly 90 vendors and agencies were on site, offering information, resources, and giveaways aimed at supporting the aging population.
“We are here to make sure our aging population is taken care of,” said Chautauqua County Executive Paul Wendel Jr. “This expo is a small portion of that, to ensure that our older adults and their caregivers are getting exposure to the services that the county provides, in addition to all the non-profits and different organizations represented here."
In addition to the vendor fair, the event featured breakout sessions led by local agencies on topics such as healthcare, legal planning, and aging in place. Representatives from elder law offices offered guidance on navigating legal and financial challenges related to aging.
“I love events like this," stated Mike Lee, Center for Elder Law and Justice. "Even as a representative, I am learning new things."
Participants agreed that the event was a success and very informative. "I think it really is a wonderful thing," commented Chautauqua resident, Jane Russo. "The information that you can get here is unbelievable and it's all in one spot. Everyone I have met at the tables have been very friendly and knowledgeable."

"I've received a lot of information," agreed Dorothy Merrill. "I have been participating in the Office for Aging Services Dinning Out Program and have enjoyed it - in addition to being a regular with Chautauqua Transit for almost two decades, but there is a lot more out there, I am learning."
Organizers say they plan to bring the Aging Expo back to SUNY Fredonia next year in their ongoing effort to connect with more residents and ensure continued access to critical resources.
