Hundreds of students from across Western New York gathered at the Northwest Arena this week for the annual STEM Wars competition and career expo, hosted by Dream It Do It Western New York.

Held over two days, the event combined hands-on competitions, interactive exhibits, and face-to-face conversations with professionals working in technology, manufacturing, and engineering fields. Students from elementary, middle, and high schools across the region participated in challenges ranging from robotics to design builds, while also exploring career pathways and apprenticeship opportunities.

“This event is about inspiring our students,” said Cindy Aronson, Dream Do It Director for Chautauqua County. “This year we had a great turn out with over 650 students attending from all over the district. They participated in multiple competitions and had the chance to meet with representatives in the field.”

The event serves a dual purpose: encouraging interest in STEM fields and helping to address the region’s workforce needs by connecting students with local companies.

For many students, the experience opened their eyes to new possibilities.

“It was great - I got to show off something I built, it was nice, and I had a lot of fun,” commented Logan Carlson, Maple Grove student competitor.

"I'm in sixth grade, but this was my first time here and we won, so it's been great," stated Collin Claydon, Falconer student.
"It's our first year and we didn't expect to win," added fellow Falconer teammate, Jared Gilbert. "We didn't think it would happen - so it's amazing."

Others said talking with local businesses helped them better understand their options after graduation.

"I had a great time," added Trent Reamm, Westfield student. "What they do here is great - and there are so many jobs out here too that people can do."

Organizers say interest in the event has continued to grow each year, with more students and industry partners getting involved.

“I am representing Nestle Purina here at the STEM Wars," explained Jarod Potter, Nestle Purina robotics operator. "My organization has partnered with Boston Dynamics, and we are using their new Spot robot dogs. We brought one with us to show the students that this technology is being used in factories now-a-days."

Dream It Do It WNY says it's already looking ahead to next year’s STEM Wars, aiming to make it bigger and even more impactful.
