PennDOT Weighs 12-Month Bayfront Parkway Closure to Recover Delays and Cut Costs
Residents aren't just listening to detours and deadlines — they're speaking out about the changes that could reshape the main roads of downtown Erie.
"Well, my wife and I and my daughter live here on 5th and State, and just curious about what's happening in our backyard," says Luqnan Munir, a local resident.
At the Erie Western PA Port Authority, PennDOT is reviewing two new traffic plans for the Bayfront Parkway. Brian McNulty explains that the original plan kept traffic moving during the three years of construction, but delays from underground utility issues have forced a reassessment.
"We ran into all kinds of things underground — asbestos lines, steam pipes, and other old utilities that weren't mapped by anybody," says Brian McNulty, District Executive of District One.
Now, a second plan is on the table.
"We're looking for ways to catch up, and our proposal is to shut down the Bayfront Parkway between Sassafras and Holland Street for about a 12- to 14-month period after Labor Day," says Brian McNulty.
"People obviously have concerns. What we're telling people is that we're maintaining access to all businesses along the waterfront," says Brian McNulty.
The second option would reroute traffic along 12th Street, which McNulty says can handle the volume — and it could also save taxpayers money.
"It's not just time, it's money. We think we save about $8 million on the total project of taxpayer dollars," says Brian McNulty.
