PennWest Receives Nearly $1M for New Dual Enrollment Initiatives

Pennsylvania Western University (PennWest) has received $999,931 from the Shapiro Administration’s Dual Credit Innovation Grant Program to grow its dual enrollment program for high school students.
The funding will help PennWest expand access to nearly 100 college courses offered at $75 per credit for Pennsylvania residents.
With no credit limit per term, students can take classes online or on campuses in California, Clarion, and Edinboro during fall, spring, and summer sessions.
The grant will allow PennWest to boost student enrollment, especially among underrepresented groups, broaden course offerings in high-demand fields, enhance student advising and support, and deepen partnerships with school districts to eliminate costs for some students.
More than 30 western Pennsylvania high schools backed PennWest’s grant application, reflecting a strong regional demand.
Since cutting costs and broadening access last year, enrollment has jumped 66%.
“This strategic advantage allows families to maximize their educational investment while giving students a competitive head start,” said Dr. Bob Mehalik, associate provost and dean of the graduate school.
Additional funding from corporate partners through the Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program supports the university’s continued dual enrollment expansion.
