Erie County Mosquitoes Test Positive for West Nile Virus

The Erie County Department of Health has confirmed that a mosquito sample collected in Harborcreek Township on May 28 has tested positive for West Nile virus, the first such case in the county this year.
No human cases have been reported at this time.
Health officials plan to conduct further mosquito monitoring and control measures in the affected area based on the extent of mosquito activity.
The virus, which is spread by certain mosquito species, can lead to West Nile encephalitis, an inflammation of the brain, particularly affecting older adults and individuals with weakened immune systems.
Residents are urged to reduce mosquito breeding sites by eliminating standing water around homes.
Recommended actions include emptying containers, clearing gutters, checking storm drains, and removing water from outdoor items like wheelbarrows and toys.
