Parents for School Options (PSO) Executive Director Kristen Tyagi condemned the Pennsylvania House's passage of House Bill 1500, which would cap public cyber charter school funding at $8,000 per student, far below the $23,000 per-pupil average received by traditional public schools.

Tyagi criticized the move, stating, “Every House member who voted for this bill should look their cyber constituents in the eye and explain why their children aren’t as important.”

She also pointed to the $7.4 billion currently held in reserve by Pennsylvania public school districts, calling the funding cut unjustified.

The bill, backed by House Democrats and supported by Gov. Josh Shapiro, faces sharp opposition from school choice advocates, who argue that it undermines educational equity for the 60,000 students enrolled in cyber charters—just 3% of the state's public school population.

Tyagi urged Senate Republicans to reject the bill, noting that 20 other states fund cyber students at parity with traditional school students. “It’s our hope Senate Republicans will stand up for these schools of choice,” she said.
