PHMC-Owned U.S. Brig Niagara Arrives in Maine for $5 Million Restoration
The Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission (PHMC)-owned U.S. Brig Niagara, the Commonwealth’s Flagship, has arrived at Bristol Marine’s Sample’s Shipyard in Boothbay Harbor, Maine, for a $5 million restoration project.
The year-long overhaul ensures the historic vessel will return in time to participate in America’s 250th anniversary celebrations in 2026.
Under PHMC’s stewardship, the Niagara serves as a key educational asset, sailing from the Erie Maritime Museum as a hands-on training platform and public ambassador of Pennsylvania’s maritime legacy.
“This essential shipyard period reflects PHMC’s investment in the ship’s future,” said Andrea Lowery, PHMC Executive Director. “Niagara is more than just a ship—it’s a symbol of Pennsylvania’s historic role and a vital educational tool.”
The extensive refit includes:
•Replacing hull planking, gun ports, and bulwark planking
•Recaulking and repainting
•Installing new engines, transmissions, generators, and electrical systems
•Repairing structural components like the stem assembly
Bristol Marine, nationally recognized for historic ship restoration, will lead the work. The Niagara is expected to return to Erie in July 2026, ready to sail again as a celebrated icon of Pennsylvania’s past and future.
