CEO of Logistics Plus Discusses Recent Trip to Ukraine
As the war continues between Russia and Ukraine. CEO of Logistics Plus, Jim Berlin has seen first-hand, the devastation the war has caused.
It's a humbling experience for Berlin, to visit Ukraine while a war rages on.
"We were there for three to four days and every day it was 75 and sunshine and not a single air raid siren. The last time we were there, every night there were air raid sires, we were down in the basement, it was miserable and you got no sleep. In fact, the night we left, Monday night, they got they crap bombed out of them", said Berlin.
During his time in Ukraine, Berlin visited multiple cities including, Erie's sister city where he presented our key of the city to their mayor.
"I gave the key to the city from Mayor Schember to the mayor over there. I told him, 'Erie played a major role in the continued fight of U.S. Independence from Britain, it was 1812, not 1776, but it was still kind of the same war going on", said Berlin.
During his travels, Berlin visited a soccer stadium, helped open a girl's soccer school, and visited his own employees. According to Berlin, "They are the heroes in this thing, not us."
He said even with the fighting, people try to keep things as normal as possible. "As they come, the area sirens go off accordingly, but in the meantime, life goes on. In Odesa, we went to a philharmonic concert", described Berlin.
Berlin was grateful that he left before another attack happened. "We left that evening to go to Moldova, which is a cool place in itself, but the bombs came that night at 3:00 in the morning."
He is hopeful to make a return trip in the future. Berlin said it's devastating to see what has happened overseas and he's working with Logistics Plus to help provide aid and supplies to those who have been hit and effected by the recent bombings.
