A federal grand jury has indicted 59-year-old Simone Renell Carr of Erie on charges including theft of government property, Social Security fraud, and making false statements to retain Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits, according to Acting U.S. Attorney Troy Rivetti.

Carr faces a potential maximum sentence of 25 years in prison and fines up to $1 million.

Actual penalties will depend on the severity of the offenses and her prior criminal history, if any.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Paul S. Sellers. The investigation was led by the Social Security Administration’s Office of the Inspector General.

Authorities remind the public that an indictment is only an allegation, and Carr is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
