The Chautauqua Institution, located in Western New York State, is gearing up to open its 151st summer season. Founded in 1874 as a training camp for Sunday school teachers, the institution has evolved into a one-of-a-kind destination with a focus on four key pillars: arts, education, recreation, and religion. Set against a backdrop of stunning natural beauty, Chautauqua offers a diverse array of programming that draws visitors from near and far.

Deborah Sunya Moore, Senior Vice President and Chief Program Officer, recently shared some of the highlights planned for this summer. The season kicks off on June 21 with a performance by Counting Crows, setting the tone for a summer filled with top-tier entertainment. Other notable musical acts include jazz singer Diana Krall, the Avett Brothers, Mary Chapin Carpenter, The Band Perry, O.A.R., and Sweet Honey in the Rock.

In addition to these performances, the Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra will present a full season of concerts, offering more than just classical music. Moore highlighted some of the unique events on the schedule, including a performance featuring the music of Elton John, a live orchestral accompaniment to the film "Pirates of the Caribbean", and a concert by Laufey, described as one of the summer’s biggest stars.

The Chautauqua Lecture Series will also feature prominent speakers throughout the season. The series begins with political commentators James Carville and Mary Matalin. Moore also announced that Kimberley Strassel, a member of the Wall Street Journal’s editorial board, will be joining the lineup, and the week will conclude with journalist and author Chris Hayes.

For those who are new to Chautauqua, Moore recommends visiting on Sundays to experience a variety of free events. Sunday afternoons feature entertainment such as performances by the President’s Own Jazz Ambassadors, matinees by the Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra, and appearances by singer-songwriters. These events provide a perfect introduction to the Chautauqua experience, allowing visitors to enjoy the vibrant atmosphere and explore the grounds.

With its rich history and commitment to offering a wide range of cultural, educational, and recreational opportunities, the Chautauqua Institution’s 151st summer season promises to be an unforgettable experience for all who attend.
