Free Soccer Program Launches in Erie for Refugee Youth
At the Erie Sports Center, in partnership with the Multicultural Community Resource Center and Erie’s Public Schools, a free soccer program has kicked off for refugee youth.
" Everybody gets to play—even if they're from any countries," said Nilon, a player.
"It all brings everyone together, and there's nothing to hate about soccer," added Luis, a student.
"It's fun here, and we get to play with our friends," another young player shared.
The program serves over 70 children, giving them access to professional fields and organized play twice a week. But beyond the game, it's the connection with the coaches that means the most.
"When I came to America, I was the same—I couldn’t really speak English. But playing the sport of football just brings everybody together," said Coach Paul Katene.
Coach Paul knows their journey well—he’s walked it himself. "Yeah, it's really positive because the community is coming together. I think it's good for the kids, and it's going to help them in the long run—because they're making connections while they’re still young," he said.
“This also provides them a safe space—to come together, enjoy life, and just be kids. A lot of these kids haven’t had the chance to be kids,” said Katie Kretz, Executive Director of MCRC.
