Chautauqua County to Host Elder Abuse Awareness Event on June 16

Chautauqua County will mark World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) with a press conference on Monday, June 16 at 2 p.m. outside the Chautauqua County Courthouse.
WEAAD, observed annually on June 15, was established in 2006 by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse and the World Health Organization.
The day serves as a global reminder of the need to protect the dignity, rights, and safety of older adults.
“Elder abuse is a public health crisis that affects not only individuals, but families, communities, and entire systems of care,” said Dana Corwin, Director of the Chautauqua County Office for Aging Services. “Our event is about education, prevention, and most importantly, standing up for those who may not be able to speak up for themselves.”
According to national estimates, 1 in 10 older Americans experience some form of elder abuse, though only 1 in 14 cases is reported.
Abuse may include physical, emotional, or financial harm, and it can significantly impact victims’ health, independence, and quality of life.
Monday’s event will include remarks from county leaders, advocates, and partner organizations working to protect older residents.
Attendees will have access to educational materials and resources about recognizing, preventing, and reporting elder abuse.
“We all have a role to play in protecting our older neighbors, friends, and family members,” Corwin said. “Raising awareness is the first step toward a safer, more supportive community for people of all ages.”
The press conference will be livestreamed on the Chautauqua County YouTube page, with a recorded version available for later viewing.
Residents are encouraged to attend or tune in to show their support for elder justice and to celebrate the strength and contributions of older adults in the community.
