For the first time, local boaters have been asked to remove and recycle the shrink wrap from their boats as part of a new environmental initiative.

The Science Consortium partnered with area marinas to collect the plastic coverings in large bins.

On Thursday, an out-of-town company arrived to pick up the collected material for proper recycling.

The goal of the program is to reduce plastic waste and promote sustainable boating practices.
