A fawn drew a crowd and sparked concern Friday, June 13th after it was found alone in an alleyway between Northwest Bank and KeyBank in downtown Warren.

The animal was located just off one of the city’s busiest streets. Witnesses say passersby stopped to observe, worried about the fawn’s safety.

Warren City Police responded to the scene, and the Pennsylvania Game Commission was contacted. Officers monitored the situation while waiting for wildlife officials to arrive.

“It’s not uncommon to see deer or even coyotes downtown, especially during the evening,” said Warren City Police Chief Joseph Sproveri. “In many cases, a doe will leave her fawn in a safe spot and return later.”

Before the Game Commission arrived, a bystander reportedly picked up the fawn and left the area.

“We believe a bystander may have taken the fawn to a local wildlife rehabilitation site,” Sproveri said. “But that has not been confirmed. We want to remind residents that it’s important to leave wildlife alone. We live in a community surrounded by the Allegheny National Forest, so it’s not unusual for animals to enter the city limits.”

One man, a resident who identified himself as Joe, tried to help the fawn before it was taken, said he was simply trying to keep the animal safe.

“I heard it crying and we really concerned, it was so small, just a few weeks old probably," he said. “It wasn't hurt, so we called 9-11, the state police and the game commission. We are just really concerned about the deer.”

As of now, the fawn’s location has not been confirmed. Wildlife officials stress the importance of calling trained personnel in situations involving wild animals.
