Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday, alongside 54 other state attorneys general, announced a historic $7.4 billion settlement with Purdue Pharma and the Sackler family, ending their ability to manufacture or sell opioids in the U.S.

The deal resolves years of litigation accusing Purdue and its owners of fueling the opioid epidemic through aggressive marketing and excessive production of addictive drugs like OxyContin.

Pennsylvania stands to receive up to $200 million over the next 15 years, depending on municipal participation.

The funds will support addiction prevention, treatment, and recovery programs across the state.

“This monumental settlement achieves the top priority of getting as much money as quickly as possible to prevention, treatment, and recovery programs across the Commonwealth,” said AG Sunday. “My office will continue engagement with municipal leaders to ensure millions of dollars reach every corner of the state.”

The first payments, totaling nearly $2.9 billion, will be distributed within three years.

A final court hearing to approve the deal is scheduled in the coming days.

If approved, this will become the largest-ever settlement involving individuals held accountable for the opioid epidemic.
