Gas prices across Western Pennsylvania jumped 16 cents this week, reaching an average of $3.493 per gallon, according to AAA East Central’s latest Gas Price Report.

The increase is tied to a surge in crude oil prices, which spiked nearly $10 per barrel after Israel launched an attack on Iran late last week.

Crude costs are the biggest factor in gas prices, and this week’s jump marks the highest oil prices since mid-February.

The national average for gas is now $3.14, two cents higher than last week.

AAA warns that continued geopolitical tensions especially near the Strait of Hormuz, a critical oil shipping channel, could further impact oil markets.

About 30% of the world’s oil supply moves through the Strait, which remains open to maritime traffic for now.
