Two federal lawsuits have been filed against Erie Insurance as their network outage, which was reported last week, continues.

The company describes it as a "cybersecurity event."

Lawsuit #1

The first lawsuit was filed in federal court in Erie Sunday by Neil Plascencia, an Erie Insurance customer in Illinois.

The lawsuit said he was notified of the "data breach" on June 13 by an email from Erie Insurance.

It alleges Plascencia's personal information, along with others, was exposed.

It was filed on behalf of Plascencia and other affected customers.

"Erie failed to properly implement basic data security practices," the lawsuit stated.

The lawsuit seeks damages "in an amount to be determined at trial."

It also asks the company to disclose the extent of the incident, make security improvements and pay for at least three years of credit monitoring services, among other things.

Lawsuit #2

The second lawsuit was filed in federal court in Erie Monday by Amy Haas, an Erie Insurance customer in Wisconsin.

The lawsuit said she is also a former employee of Erie Insurance.

It alleges the company didn't "properly secure and safeguard private information that was entrusted to them," and didn't properly notify customers about the problem.

The lawsuit also alleges that client information was exposed to criminals.

It was filed on behalf of Haas and other affected customers. It is seeking damages to be paid to Haas and others.

It is also requesting a jury trial.

Company's Response

In response to the lawsuit filed Monday, Erie Insurance sent the following statement: "Erie Insurance has not yet received the second complaint and cannot comment at this time."
