DeFoor Releases Audit Reports for Erie and Crawford County Volunteer Firefighter Relief Associations
Pennsylvania Auditor General Timothy DeFoor has released audit reports for volunteer firefighters’ relief associations (VFRAs) in 24 counties, including Erie and Crawford.
The audits ensure that state aid is properly used to support local volunteer firefighters.
In Crawford County, the Randolph Township Volunteer Firemen’s Relief Association received a clean audit with no findings.
In Erie County:
•The Platea Borough Firemen’s Relief Association was cited for insufficient surety (fidelity) bond coverage.
•The Springfield Firemen’s Relief Association received a clean audit with no findings.
These VFRAs are funded through state aid distributed from a tax on fire insurance policies sold in Pennsylvania by out-of-state companies.
In 2024, more than $68 million was distributed to support training, equipment, and other essentials for volunteer fire services.
