Around 3:45 p.m. outside a home near Route 430 and French Creek Road. When officers arrived on the scene, a middle-aged white man reportedly emerged from the residence carrying a shotgun.

Despite repeated attempts by deputies to de-escalate the situation, the suspect fired at them, striking one deputy in the hands. Both deputies returned fire, ultimately killing the suspect.

Chautauqua County Sheriff James B. Quattrone, “Upon arrival, our officers encountered an armed subject. Gunfire was exchanged. Emergency medical services responded to the scene and provided first aid to two individuals—one officer and the suspect. Unfortunately, the suspect succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.”

The injured deputy sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Members from every law enforcement agency in Chautauqua County are now involved in the response. Both the District Attorney’s Office and the New York State Attorney General’s Office are actively investigating the incident, which remains ongoing and continues to develop.
