The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office has released new information following a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred Wednesday afternoon on Mina French Creek Road.

At approximately 3:34 p.m. on June 18, deputies were dispatched to a reported domestic incident at 2900 Mina French Creek Road.

Two deputies arrived on scene by 3:55 p.m., where they encountered 62-year-old Mark W. Bemis outside the residence armed with a shotgun.

Authorities say Bemis discharged the weapon once and repeatedly pointed it at one of the deputies, refusing multiple verbal commands to drop the firearm.

During the confrontation, several shots were fired.

One deputy sustained non-life-threatening injuries to his hands. Bemis was struck by return fire.

An additional deputy arrived and administered first aid to Bemis until EMS personnel arrived.

Despite rescue efforts by local fire department EMS crews and Chautauqua County paramedics, Bemis was pronounced dead at the scene.

The injured deputy was treated at UPMC Hamot Hospital and later released.

The Sheriff’s Office states the investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
