The heat on Sunday didn't stop children from learning basic soccer skills with a Go Play Day.

Sunday's event with the Erie Sports Commission and Dick's Sporting Goods also served as a good reminder about the importance of staying hydrated in hot temperatures.

Not only could kids learn important soccer skills that they can build off of, but they also learned skills to staying hydrating, especially when it comes to warm weather.

On what could be a record breaking day day for the heat, keeping kids cool was top of mind for event organizers.

Sydney Dietz, the Event and Marketing Manager for the Erie Sports Commission explained, "So we are teaching them right now. There are misters out, so they are staying cool with that and we told them to hydrate because we told them it was important to take care of yourself, while also enjoying the nice weather."

Extra misters and drinks were brought in for players to stay hydrated. As Danielle Steffan, the Community Events Manager for Dick's Sporting Goods explained, "It's definitely hot today. We have some shade stations. We have a mister out on the field. We are going to be taking lots of breaks to make sure the kids stay hydrated."

Taking care of their bodies is a life skill that parents said they try to teach their children at home. Sylvia Fair, a Mother said, "Lots of sun screen, lots of water. They have little ice packs over there, so I'm sure she will be utilizing that and just trying to stay in the shade as much as possible."

Parents said they are appreciative that its enforced at clinics like these. "Listen to your body. If you are hot, take a break. If you are thirsty, get some water, so it's really important to teach kids young", said Steffan.

Young players are already on picking up on the importance of listening to their bodies. Jocelyn Flick, one of the soccer players said she learned to "Have water bottles"  and she enjoys summer "because I can play in the water."

The Erie Sports Commission is gearing up to help out with the Lake Erie Cycle Fest which happens at the end of July.

Meantime, Dick's Sporting Goods already has plans for a future tailgate, a back to school event, and a Halloween activity in the coming months.
