As a heat wave sweeps across much of the United States, including Erie County, health experts are warning about the rising risk of dehydration.

Dr. Allan Capin, a family medicine physician at Cleveland Clinic, says the soaring temperatures cause our bodies to sweat more in an effort to stay cool, leading to increased fluid loss.

“People often underestimate how quickly dehydration can set in during extreme heat,” said Dr. Capin. “It’s important to stay ahead of it by drinking plenty of fluids, even if you don’t feel thirsty.”
