Gas prices in Western Pennsylvania have surged by 10 cents this week, now averaging $3.591 per gallon, according to AAA East Central’s latest Gas Price Report.

The jump reflects broader national trends, where the average price per gallon has increased eight cents to $3.22.

U.S. airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities briefly pushed oil futures to $78 per barrel over the weekend, before retreating to the mid-$70s by Monday.

Adding to the uncertainty, Iran’s Parliament voted Sunday to block the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic shipping route responsible for nearly 20% of the world’s oil supply.

While the measure is not yet finalized, it has already rattled global markets. Most of the cost of a gallon of gas is directly tied to the price of crude oil, which is now at its highest point since mid-February.

Despite the increase, gas prices remain 22 cents lower than they were last June.
