NWPA K9 Search & Rescue Hosts Advanced Urban Light Disaster Seminar in Erie
Northwest Pennsylvania K9 Search and Rescue (NWPAK9SAR) will host the Urban Light Disaster Seminar from June 26 to 30, bringing elite instruction and vital training to K9 handlers and their dogs from across the region.
The seminar runs daily from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Perry Hi-Way Hose Company – Station 42, 501 Robison Rd E, Erie, PA.
The five-day event features nationally recognized instructors including Master Trainer Matt Zarella of American Patriot K9 Training LLC and IPWDA Trainer Jeremy Pell.
Participants will gain field experience in simulated urban disaster environments, learning to detect scent in rubble, navigate hazardous terrain, and improve K9-handler communication.
“This is not just training, it’s a mission to prepare our teams for the worst-day scenarios when every second counts,” said LuAnn Gatti, team president. “With more extreme weather and urban emergencies on the rise, this specialized education is critical.”
The training comes amid growing awareness of disaster readiness needs in northwest Pennsylvania.
Through real-world scenario work, the seminar equips local search and rescue teams to respond to collapsed structures, weather-related crises, and other emergency events with heightened effectiveness.
NWPAK9SAR remains committed to professional development and community service.
Events like this seminar strengthen local emergency response networks and help ensure that skilled K9 units are ready to act when lives are at stake.
