The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection has issued a Code Orange Air Quality Alert for Erie County, signaling that pollution levels are considered unhealthy for sensitive groups, including those with asthma, COPD, or other respiratory conditions.

The alert remains in effect until 9:00 p.m. on Monday.

Residents who are part of these sensitive groups are advised to remain indoors and limit outdoor activities, especially during peak afternoon hours when air quality typically worsens.

If going outdoors is necessary, frequent breaks and reduced exertion are recommended.

Dr. Joseph Rowane of AHN Saint Vincent emphasized the importance of staying informed about local conditions.

“If you stay informed by looking at the air quality index that’s provided by you folks, that can be very helpful,” said Dr. Rowane. “If the index shows deep colors—red, maroon, purple—stay indoors. If it’s green, meaning ‘go,’ it’s OK.”

The Air Quality Index (AQI) provides real-time data on pollution levels and potential health risks.

A Code Orange level means air pollution may pose a health risk to vulnerable populations, even if the general public is not affected.
