Chautauqua County Officials Urge NYS Governor to Repower a Dunkirk NRG Plant with Nuclear Energy

Chautauqua County leaders are urging Governor Kathy Hochul to prioritize the long unused NRG power plant in Dunkirk as a site for New York’s planned nuclear energy expansion.
The appeal follows Hochul’s announcement directing the New York Power Authority (NYPA) to develop at least one gigawatt of new zero-emission nuclear capacity across Upstate New York.
Chautauqua County Executive PJ Wendel, State Senator George Borrello, and Assemblyman Andrew Molitor praised Hochul’s push for nuclear development but emphasized that the dormant Dunkirk plant represents an opportunity to bring jobs, revenue, and reliable clean energy to Western New York.
“The NRG facility in Dunkirk has sat unused for nearly a decade,” said County Executive PJ Wendel. “Repowering it with advanced nuclear technology can help meet our state’s energy goals while revitalizing a community that has waited too long for reinvestment.”
Wendel and other officials noted the plant’s existing infrastructure, potential for baseload generation, and strategic location on the state’s energy grid.
They argue that using the Dunkirk site could set a statewide precedent for repurposing legacy power plants.
Senator George Borrello also voiced support, adding, “This is the moment to make a long-term investment, not another costly short-term bailout. Dunkirk deserves a seat at the table in New York’s clean energy future.”
Assemblyman Andrew Molitor called the opportunity both “practical and impactful,” pointing to growing demand for reliable, zero emission energy and a community ready to support the project.
Governor Hochul’s broader nuclear directive stems from her 2025 State of the State agenda and comes amid mounting concerns over electric grid stability, decarbonization mandates, and regional energy equity.
With renewed momentum behind nuclear energy, Chautauqua County leaders say Dunkirk’s time may finally have arrived.
