Following recent power outages during the dangerous heat wave in Erie County, the American Red Cross is urging residents to take extra precautions to stay safe and healthy.

Key Safety Tips from the Red Cross:

•Find a Cool Place: If your home becomes too hot, go to a public place like a mall, library, or designated cooling center. Even sitting in the shade outdoors can be cooler than being             indoors without AC.

•Stay Cool: Take frequent cool showers or baths to lower your body temperature.

•Medical Needs: If you rely on electricity for medical devices or refrigeration for medicine, talk to your doctor about a backup plan.

•Prepare a Cooler: Keep an ice-filled cooler stocked with food, water, and medicine in case of extended outages.

Protect Your Food:

   •Eat perishable items first.

•Keep fridge and freezer doors closed to maintain cold temperatures.

•Use thermometers to check that food stays below 40°F.

•When in doubt, throw it out.
