Consider an Erie Staycation
If your summer vacation budget has you concerned about travel and hotel costs, why not consider a staycation right here in the Erie region.
The tourism agency VisitErie is actively promoting Erie, Pennsylvania, as a premier travel destination with its new brand, "The Great Lake Good Life." While the campaign is aimed at attracting outside tourists, locals are encouraged to see Erie through the same lens—as a vibrant destination with a wealth of amenities and attractions conveniently close to home.
According to VisitErie Communications Director Chris Temple, more residents are beginning to embrace the idea of "staycations," choosing to explore the treasures in their own backyard. Temple explains, "We are starting to think that there's more people that are taking staycations and staying close to home, and that makes sense because there's so much to see and do right here in our own backyard. People really can experience a variety of different things to do no matter what their tastes are."
One of the biggest draws for visitors and locals alike is Presque Isle State Park, one of the most visited destinations in Pennsylvania. This natural gem offers something for all ages, from scenic beaches to outdoor activities.
For families, Erie boasts several iconic attractions, including Waldameer Park and Water World, The Experience Children's Museum, and the Erie Zoo. These destinations provide fun and engaging experiences for children and parents alike.
Adults might consider exploring the Lake Erie Wine Country Trail, which features 20 wineries along the picturesque lakeshore. Krista Stempka, owner of Driftwood Cellars Winery, highlights the convenience of visiting wineries right in the area. "It's a great place. You don't have to go far, you don't have to pay for a place to stay or a rental car. Especially like Ontario—you don't have to try and cross the border. So yeah, it's right at everybody's back door."
While VisitErie’s primary goal is to attract new tourists to the area, they encourage Erie County residents to take advantage of the incredible experiences available right at home. Chris Temple suggests several must-visit spots. "Going to the top of our Bicentennial Tower, and just taking in those beautiful views of the bay and the lake, maybe taking a boat cruise whether it's on Scallywags, Lettie G. Howard or the Victorian Princess. I would say definitely the bayfront district, downtown district, Presque Isle State Park -- those are definite top five destinations of things to do here."
SO consider a staycation, wHY WOULD YOU WANT VISITORS TO HAVE ALL THE FUN...WHEN YOU CAN SAVE ON GAS AND HOTEL COSTS AND JOIN THEM.
