The Erie SeaWolves are going prehistoric with a celestial twist, introducing a brand new alternate identity: the Erie Moon Mammoths.

The quirky rebrand comes courtesy of comedian John Oliver and his team at Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, who chose the SeaWolves for a surprise transformation as part of a playful segment on the HBO show.

The name celebrates Erie’s unique link to ancient history and local lore.

In 1991, George Moon of Summit Township discovered woolly mammoth remains while scuba diving in Lake Pleasant.

The “Moon Mammoth” find, now housed in the State Museum of Pennsylvania, is one of the most complete specimens ever recovered in the Great Lakes region.

UPMC Park will debut the Moon Mammoths on Saturday, July 19, when Erie hosts the Bowie Baysox.

John Oliver is expected to attend what’s being dubbed a night of “MAMMOTH FUN,” presented by UPMC Hamot.

The first 1,000 fans will receive a Moon Mammoths squishy toy, and a fireworks show will follow the game.

The on field uniforms fuse lunar and prehistoric imagery.

Jerseys feature a rising moon design and a cartoon mammoth in a space helmet on the sleeve, while official caps sport the same logo.

“This new identity is playful, prehistoric, purposeful, and purple,” said Erie Team President Greg Coleman, thanking Oliver, MLB, and community partners for their collaboration and creativity.

The SeaWolves will take the field as the Moon Mammoths on four dates in 2025:

   Saturday, July 19

   Tuesday, August 19

   Friday, September 12

Saturday, September 13 (as part of Strike Out Cancer Weekend)

Tickets for July 19 and Moon Mammoths merchandise are available now at SeaWolves.com and MoonMammoths.com.
