As fireworks and gatherings approach this Independence Day, the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America is offering caregivers a dementia friendly guide to help their loved ones enjoy the holiday in comfort and safety.

The foundation encourages families to follow the F O U R steps to support those living with Alzheimer’s or related conditions:

•Forgo the fireworks: Loud sounds and flashing lights can cause fear or confusion, especially for veterans. Consider indoor alternatives like watching fireworks on TV or using glow sticks and soft lighting.

•Organize and be prepared: Prepare your loved one in advance for possible noise. Use white noise or soft music to ease anxiety. Have comfort items nearby and check in regularly if the person lives alone or arrange for someone to stay with them.

•Understated gatherings work best:  Keep celebrations small and familiar. Use name tags, avoid big crowds and stick to daily routines. Midday gatherings are often better than evening events to avoid sundowning effects.

•Revise how you celebrate: Celebrate with calm activities such as making decorations, listening to patriotic music or baking themed treats. Looking through family photo albums can also help create joyful and meaningful moments.

Families can reach the AFA Helpline to speak with a licensed social worker by calling 866-232-8484, texting 646-586-5283 or visiting www.alzfdn.org.

The helpline is available seven days a week.
