Close to half a million Pennsylvanians will be getting rebates deposited in their bank accounts today.

For eligible homeowners and renters, the property tax and rent rebate program gives anywhere from $380 to $1000 back from their taxes.

Governor Josh Shapiro reminded citizens this week that around $258 million in rebates will be sent out to 470,000 recipients on July 1st. Some of the rebates will go out through direct deposit. Other will get mailed in the check and should be arriving within the next few weeks.

The governor also announced the program's application deadline has been expanded to December.

Because of expansions to the program two years ago, there’s now around 600,000 Pennsylvanians who qualify for the rebate, which means around 130,000 have not applied.

Shapiro says the check in the mail helps seniors on fixed incomes afford things like groceries and prescriptions.

"I've heard for years from seniors, who are struggling to stay in their homes, who needed just a little bit of extra help,” Shapiro said, "and how the property tax rebate is a critical lifeline for them."

The property tax and rent rebate program gives money back to Pennsylvanians on low to moderate incomes who are: senior citizens, people who have lost a spouse, and adults with disabilities.
