Boat Rental Owners Urge Safety Ahead of Holiday Weekend
Whether you're soaking up the sun on a Presque Isle beach or heading out on Lake Erie, safety on the water is top of mind—especially as the Fourth of July weekend approaches.
We spoke with Rob Orelski , owner of Port Erie Sports, and his daughter Morgan Orelski about growing concerns over safety.
“One of the most common violations we see is speeding through no-wake zones,” Morgan said.
That kind of recklessness "recently led to serious damage—and lost revenue," Rob said.
“A group watched the mandatory safety video, went out, and still crashed into the dock,” Orelski explained. “They put a good-sized hole in the side of our boat. We won’t be able to rent it for the Fourth, Fifth, or Sixth. That’s a big hit for us.”
After 18 years in business, Orelski says this season is shaping up to be their worst yet.
“About a week ago, we had a full boat go out, and they picked up even more people—which is a huge no-no. They didn’t have enough life jackets, and the boat was overloaded. Another boat passed, created a wake, and the overloaded boat sank.”
Orelski stressed the importance of not just wearing a life jacket but wearing it properly.
Morgan Orelski reminded everyone that boating under the influence carries serious consequences.
“Everyone wants to be out there having a good time, but make sure you have a designated driver. You can get a DUI on the water,” she said.
