Plastic Free July
The Plastic Free Foundation provides resources and ideas to reduce single use plastic items. For the entire month of July, they are asking that everyone forgoes their use of plastic.
Plastic poses a significant risk to the environment and to our health. Plastic is used for food containers, grocery bags, bottled water and almost everything we use. Recent research has provided evidence that using plastic can have serious health concerns. Plastic found in humans has been linked to heart attacks, strokes, and also has rising concern on reproductive health.
In 2024 the United States shipped more than 35 thousand tons of plastic to Malaysia. The country has banned all shipments from nations that have not signed an agreement regulating hazardous waste.
A local Professor from Gannon University says, " The fact that Malaysia is now joining a lot of countries and they will not take plastic recycling from the United States because we have not signed the Basel Convention. So, this idea that we can recycle our way out of this issue is actually really a misnomer. So, this really is the importance of going to reusable.
