The Last Word: Amazing 103-Year Old Still Driving, Playing Cards
I am inspired by anyone who is able to stay active in their older years. I've met a lot of people in their 70s, 80s, and 90s who are truly amazing. Now I have another hero. I'm hoping to spend some time with Dotty Strucker, of Millcreek. Age 103. I may have to wait a while. Dotty is very busy. She's has an appointment at the hair salon. She is driving there herself. She cranks up Bon Jovi on the radio and she's off.
Dotty could have had her son drive her to the salon or one of her many friends, but hey, she has a good driving record and a valid driver's license. It expires in 2029.
"I can drive for another four years but I don't know how much longer I'm going to be wanting to drive,” she says.
Dotty has kept mementos from her last four birthday celebrations. She has little plastic tiaras that a friend gave her to commemorate each birthday in the three digits. She's always asked to share her secret to living a long, active life.
"What I'm saying, I guess, is to keep moving,” Dotty says with a laugh. “Don't keep sitting in your rocking chair too long. Get up and move."
Dotty bowled until she was 97 years old. When bowling season ended, she joined her friends on the golf course. These days, Dotty has fun with her card club. The members meet once a month at Andy's Pub to have lunch and to play 500. Last month, the players took some time to celebrate Dotty's birthday before the cards were dealt. Dotty's sister Pat Lacey, is also a member of that card club. She is 82 years old.
"When I was growing up, I was in Dorothy's wedding. I was the flower girl. I was five years old then,” says Pat.
Dotty has another sister who is 93. She had a brother who died at age 98. Good genes run in this family. However, Dotty watches TV game shows to keep her mind sharp.
"$100,000 Pyramid. That's a good one,” says Dotty.
Dotty tries to answer questions on the game shows before the actual contestants give their response. Dotty also keeps sharp doing jigsaw puzzles. What a nice visit I’ve had with Dotty. But alas, it's time for me to leave. I ask Dotty for a lift back to work.
