The Erie Otters have officially bolstered their blue line with the signing of Julius Saari, their second pick in the 2025 CHL Import Draft. The Finnish defenseman, selected 93rd overall, has inked an OHL Scholarship and Development Agreement, marking a significant addition to Erie’s defensive core ahead of the upcoming season.

Saari, an 18-year-old native of Vantaa, Finland, becomes the first Finnish-born player ever selected by the Otters in the Import Draft. Known for his physical presence and defensive awareness, the 6’2” blueliner played last season with Jokerit U20, recording four points and a +17 rating in 34 games. He also made his mark with Jokerit’s first team, adding a goal in five appearances.

Internationally, Saari brings leadership experience to Erie, having captained Team Finland at the World Under-18 Championships and represented his country at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup.

“We are very excited to officially welcome Julius and the Saari family to the Erie Otters,” said Otters Director of Hockey Operations Scott Grieve. “His defensive mindset, physicality, and ability to transition the puck quickly make him a key piece of our future.”

Described by Elite Prospects as a “big-bodied, physical defensive defenseman” with strong skating and disruptive play in his own zone, Saari is expected to play a prominent role for the Otters this fall.

With Saari's signing, the Erie Otters continue to shape a formidable and disciplined defensive unit, aiming to build momentum heading into the 2025–26 OHL season.
