The Erie County Department of Health has confirmed that a mosquito sample collected in the City of Erie on July 2 has tested positive for West Nile virus.

This marks the second confirmed positive sample in Erie County so far in 2025. No human cases have been reported at this time.

Health officials will conduct additional monitoring and, if necessary, control measures in the area where the infected mosquitoes were collected.

West Nile virus can cause serious illness, particularly in older adults and those with weakened immune systems. To help reduce the risk of infection, residents are urged to eliminate standing water around their homes, which serves as breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

Tips to Reduce Mosquito Breeding:

•Dispose of items that collect water, such as containers and old tires.

•Clean roof gutters and check for clogged drains or leaky outdoor fixtures.

•Empty water from toys, wheelbarrows, and plant containers when not in use.

•Maintain birdbaths and ornamental pools, or stock them with fish.

•Use mosquito repellents containing DEET and ensure window screens are intact.

•Stay indoors during peak mosquito activity hours: dawn, dusk, and early evening.
