Update on Meadville Police Arrest Video
Video that was exclusively shared with Erie News Now last Friday has been talked about all weekend after going viral.
We now know that the man being arrested in the video is being identified as 33-year-old Nathan Koman and according to Meadville Police Chief Michael Stefanucci, earlier that day a felony warrant was issued for Koman's arrest for drug charges.
"One of my officers saw Mr. Koman traveling on Baldwin Street on the electric bike, he exited the patrol car and encountered Mr. Koman, attempted to place him under arrest and then the incident that we see occurred," said Stefanucci.
As the department is conducting an internal investigation, the city has hired PMG Investigations and retired FBI agent George Gast to conduct a Use of Force Review, a move that City Manager Maryann Menanno said is part of the city's commitment to public transparency.
Stefanucci also said that it is important to know all the facts before making a conclusion.
"It is very shocking to see someone being punched by anyone, whether it be a police officer or another citizen, nobody likes to see that nor do we, but just keep an open mind that it may have been a necessary course of action," Stefanucci said.
Following the confrontation, Stefanucci said Koman was taken into custody and then transported to Meadville Medical Center, where he was cleared with only minor injuries, before being brought to the Crawford County Correctional Facility and was arraigned on that warrant and given a $25,000 bond.
The results of both the internal and use of force investigations will be shared with the Crawford County District Attorney's Office.
