Rescue crews recovered the body of 49-year-old Richard Bofo of Pittsburgh from Lake Erie Wednesday morning.

The body was found about five miles offshore from Avonia Beach following a call just before 9 a.m. Bofo was pronounced dead at 10:20 a.m. on July 16.

According to Erie County Coroner Lyell Cook, Bofo’s death has been ruled a drowning. There will be no autopsy, and no signs of trauma were found.

Cook confirmed the case is connected to the July 2 disappearance of two boaters near the Walnut Creek Access area. The second boater has not yet been located.

This remains an ongoing investigation.
