The Oil Region Alliance has secured a $20,000 Semiquincentennial Grant from America250PA to support a multi-day kayak sojourn along the Allegheny River in celebration of the United States’ 250th birthday.

Planned for late July or early August 2026, the 10- to 12-day journey will begin in Warren and end in Pittsburgh, offering participants fully supported travel, including meals, lodging, and transportation. The event will also feature historical re-enactments, cultural and environmental programming, and media coverage including photos, video, and a commemorative book.

“We’re excited to create this opportunity to show off the river and remind people how influential it was in the evolution of our state and the country,” said Kim Harris, Outdoor Recreation Manager for the Oil Region Alliance, who is leading the project.

The Alliance is collaborating with organizations along the river to coordinate the event. Sponsorship opportunities will be announced as planning progresses.

The grant comes from America250PA, the commonwealth’s official commission for planning activities marking the nation's 250th anniversary. Funded by Governor Josh Shapiro and the Pennsylvania Legislature, the commission is distributing $1 million in grants during the 2024-2025 fiscal year. The Oil Region Alliance received the maximum award amount.
