Beachgoers discovered a body this afternoon just offshore at Presque Isle State Park’s Beach 1 — ending the search for a young female kayaker who went missing in the water Friday evening.

Multiple agencies responded after visitors spotted the young woman’s body shortly after 1 p.m. and pulled her onto the shore.

Coroner Lyell Cook confirmed the victim is 17-year-old Madison Gallagher, from North Huntingdon — a suburb of Pittsburgh.

The search began Friday evening after two teens reportedly took a kayak out into Lake Erie and got into trouble in the surf. One teen was rescued by a nearby jet skier and treated on shore. Madison was not found until today.

Coroner Cook says he expects to rule the death accidental due to drowning.

The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission is handling the investigation.
