Tall Ships Erie Preparations Underway

Captain William Sabatini is preparing to showcase Erie's maritime history.
On August 21-24, he's set to host Tall Ships Erie 2025 along Erie's bayfront.
"It's pretty exciting because the ships left Duluth this week, and they are headed this way," said Captain Sabatini. "This is an opportunity for us to shine as a region. Erie is a maritime city."
Held every three years, the festival helps raise funds for sailing programs and maritime educational initiatives, while providing an economic boost to the city.
"It's a huge fundraiser for our community," said Captain Sabatini. "Every hotel is going to be full. The bars, the restaurants, the whole community wins because of the economic impact we have on this region."
Along with Erie's own Lettie G. Howard, a total of nine tall ships are expected to participate in this year's festival.
According to Captain Sabatini, this year's event will be more accessible to visitors.
"One of the things we are doing, is everything is going to be at Dobbins Landing or the Bayfront Convention Center," said Captain Sabatini. "It's kind of a one stop shopping for everything."
Those attending the fest can park in downtown Erie and catch an EMTA shuttle to the bayfront.
Captain Sabatini does not expect the ongoing Bayfront Parkway construction project to be an issue.
"One thing that PennDOT is doing is creating a pedestrian access on State Street for Tall Ships Erie," said Captain Sabatini. "We appreciate that they recognize the importance of this event."
According to Captain Sabatini, the best way to support the event is to purchase a ticket.
"That was one of the things in 2022, is there was a huge increase in people in Erie at 40 percent, but there was a decrease in ticket sales," said Captain Sabatini. "There was a lot of people coming down to the bayfront, but they weren't buying a ticket, so support what we do by buying a ticket, come inside and come meet the crew and see the ships."
