Young Woman Dies After Collapsing During Presque Isle Half Marathon
Erie News Nowe learned tragedy struck Sunday during the Erie Runners Club Presque Isle Half Marathon
According to race officials, 1,323 people registered for the event, which loops around Presque Isle State Park. There was light rain at the start, but the race went on as scheduled.
Finishing first for the men was Benjamin Jones of State College. Coming in 12th overall—but first among the women—was Grace Rowley of Pittsburgh.
But during the race, sources tell Erie News Now that a young female runner, age 20 or 21, collapsed on the returning end of the course and needed immediate medical attention from paramedics on standby.
Our sources say rescuers worked on the young woman at the scene and transported her to the hospital, but she did not survive.
We do not yet have her name or official cause of death.
