VisitErie President and CEO John Oliver met his Emmy winning namesake Last Week Tonight host John Oliver during Saturday night’s sold-out Moon Mammoths game at UPMC Park.

The event marked the official debut of the Erie SeaWolves' new alternate identity, the Moon Mammoths, created as part of a nationwide minor league team rebranding contest sponsored by Last Week Tonight. Erie was the grand prize winner and with that came a visit from the show’s host.

The encounter between the two John Olivers was brief but memorable. Erie’s John Oliver recalled filming a TikTok in front of Mad Anthony Wayne’s infamous kettle after the HBO host made jokes about it on his show.

While the video of their conversation doesn’t include audio, Erie’s Oliver said he got a genuine laugh when he confessed, he’d considered sitting in the kettle for the video. “For the record, I’ve been John Oliver in Erie since before he was on HBO,” he quipped. “But I think we can agree there’s room for both of us.”

The night was a grand slam for Erie: full stands, national press, and a wave of mammoth-themed mania. The Moon Mammoths will return to UPMC Park three more times this season: August 19, and September 12–13.
