Local Barber Retires After 68-year Career

For Glenn Kuzma of Kuzma Family Styling Salon, it's a day of mixed emotions.
After cutting hair for 68 years, the longtime barber has decided to retire.
Kuzma became a barber apprentice in 1957.
"I was a carpenter and my dad said 'hey, you're going to get drafted," said Kuzma. "Learn to cut hair and you'll have it easy in the service."
He's been cutting hair ever since he graduated from barber school.
"Ended up graduating from barber school before I got drafted, and I kind of liked it," said Kuzma. "A lot better than sitting out in the cold putting siding on houses."
Over the years, Kuzma has seen a lot of trends, but one style has stood the test of time.
"I still like the old flat top," said Kuzma. "That's what I started with time in the service, people in the service and they all got flat tops and I enjoyed that the most."
Call it a coincidence, but that's the last haircut he performed on his last paying and long-time customer Ken Norfolk.
Erie News Now asked the 89-year-old barber what he has enjoyed most about his career.
"I guess what I enjoy is people and that's what I'm going to miss," said Kuzma. "I enjoy being with people, talking with people, and harassing people, and that's the story of my life I guess."
As he enters retirement, Kuzma thanks the community for its support.
"I'd just like to thank everybody for their supporting me through it all, the family too," said Kuzma. "It's been a beautiful run. Couldn't have planned it any better."
