Fewer Responders, More Calls: Edinboro VFD Faces Volunteer Crisis
When you call 9-1-1, you expect someone to be there in a few minutes,” said Captain Jim Dahle.
But that expectation is becoming harder to meet — as volunteer numbers continue to decline at fire departments across the region, including the Edinboro Volunteer Fire Department.
“EMT and fire departments are having a public service crisis,” says Captain Jim Dahle of the Edinboro VFD. The department responds to more than 1,500 calls each year — with only around 10 active members.
“We all have families, and we work multiple jobs. We can’t always just leave,” Dahle explains.
It’s a growing concern, not only for the safety of the community, but for the firefighters themselves. “Most times, we’re going out with just two responders, Dahle says.
The Department covers a vast area, stretching from Saegertown to Summit Township — and even as far as the Ohio line. Despite these challenges, Dahle says "Our goal right now is to get the funding we need to better serve and protect our community."
