It may just be July, but Pennsylvania Republicans are chattering about who should be their candidate for governor for next year's election.

"It's not unusual for statewide campaigns to begin a year or two before the actual election,” said Christopher Nicholas, a Republican political consultant who runs Eagle Consulting. "Pennsylvania is a big state. 45,500 square miles. It takes a lot of time to get to all the nooks and crannies."

Congressman Dan Meuser was expected to announce a run for governor, with a promise of endorsement from President Donald Trump. Earlier this month though, Meuser said he won't throw his hat in the ring.

State Senator Doug Mastriano, who was the Republican candidate in 2022, has been posting on X about another run— even asking followers to vote on a campaign logo. He has not made an official announcement.

The favorite for many Republican strategists is Stacy Garrity, Pennsylvania's State Treasurer. While she has not confirmed a campaign yet, many expect an announcement in the coming weeks.

“One of the advantages that someone like Stacy Garrity, the treasurer who's already won and run twice statewide, has is… she’s been to a lot of these places,” Nicholas said. "It’s easy to say I've been to Philadelphia. It's harder to say I've been to Danville or McKean County."

The chair of Pennsylvania’s Republican party, State Sen. Greg Rothman, says the political party will choose which nominee they will back in September, as opposed to them usually picking in February. Primaries in Pennsylvania are not until later in the spring.
