There are a lot of different ways to get around, like by public transportation, by car, or on foot.  However, Erie police say that if you use an electric bike, you need to be cautious.

They posted a warning on Facebook that said they’ve “noticed an increase in reports and investigations for electric bike thefts.”

That does not surprise Michael Hertner, the general manager of Bert’s Bikes and Fitness in Summit Twp.

These bikes are becoming more popular, so there are more of them to take.

“It’s fun, easy, inexpensive transportation, especially with gas and car prices being so high,” he said.

Several e-bike brands have built-in security features.

He said some people might take parts of the bike, instead. That's why they sell several other devices and locks to keep bikes safe.

Erie police advise that you should put your bike in front of a camera, leave your porch lights on, and, of course, lock it up.

“Get a quality lock or locks and keep your bike locked up securely to something secure,” Hertner said.
